About

Cristina Getson
Cristina Getson is an abstract expressionist painter based in Toronto, Canada.
After receiving her degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto and working as an engineer, she started taking evening art courses at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her love of expressing herself through painting led her to join a studio collective, and to be invited to exhibit at international art fairs.

Working in acrylic, Cristina’s work is imbued with vibrant colours, and influenced by the pull of opposites - smooth and rough, light and dark, indefinite and detailed. It is a dialogue between past and present in order to capture not the physical aspects of a moment in time, but rather the feeling of it. The application of paint is made visible through the brushstrokes and marks left behind; it is a joyful revelling in the materiality of the paint itself.

Cristina has exhibited in Canada and across the United States, and was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence at Palazzo Monti in Italy, in 2018.
Current inspiration comes from Abstract Expressionists such as de Kooning and Joan Mitchell, as well as contemporary artists such as Cecily Brown, Peter Doig, and fellow Canadian John Brown.
“[Painting] is like riding a bicycle with no hands. I am in it. I am not there anymore. It is a state of non-self-consciousness.”
Joan Mitchell
